Choosing the Right Food Packaging for Your Kenyan Food Business
Food packaging decisions are usually made under pressure — a new menu item needs a container by Friday, or a supplier has run out of what you normally use. It is easy to default to whatever is easiest to find, but the wrong packaging can quietly cost a food business money and customers.

A few practical questions worth asking before you order in bulk:

Is the food hot, cold, or both? Kraft paper bowls with clear lids work well for salads, cold sides, and takeaway meals that need to stay visible and presentable. If the food is served hot and oily, grease-resistant lining matters more than the container looks — a bowl that leaks or goes soft halfway through delivery reflects badly on the kitchen, not the rider.

Does it need to be resealable? Multipack products — bundled snacks, retail-ready items, anything moving through a wholesaler — usually benefit from shrink wrap rather than a rigid container. It keeps items secure in transit and gives a tamper-evident, retail-ready finish without adding much cost per unit.

Is it going straight to a customer, or through a distributor first? Products that pass through several hands before reaching a shelf benefit from packaging that signals it has not been opened. This is where tamper-evident elements — even something as simple as a security seal — start to matter, particularly for bottled or liquid products.

What does "eco-friendly" actually need to mean for your customers? Biodegradable kraft packaging photographs well and increasingly matters to Kenyan consumers, but it is not free — factor the slightly higher unit cost into your pricing rather than absorbing it silently.

There is rarely one correct answer here — a caterer, a bakery, and a bottled water producer will land on different packaging for good reasons. What matters is choosing deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever is on the shelf when you are in a hurry.

Zawadi Hygiene supplies kraft paper bowls, shrink wrap film, and security seals to food businesses across Kenya. If you are not sure what fits your specific product, send us a message — we would rather help you avoid an expensive packaging mistake than sell you the wrong thing.
